New Eyeballs. Life Lessons. And a Re-Cap of 2011.

What a year.

I don’t know about you guys, but I feel like this year changed me in ways that all my previous years combined didn’t. The amount of things that happened, things I learned, things I did, and changes to my core self and life, is pretty extraordinary, and not only in the “remarkable” definition of the word, but moreso in the “unusual” definition. I feel like nothing is the same for me as it once was. And looking back to last December 29, there sat a girl in my mom’s living room who had absolutely no idea that she’d see the world this year, and that nothing would ever be the same again. That she’d see herself. That she’d HAVE to look. And learn. And grow. And love. And be different. These eyes are new now. These bones have crossed ground they never had before. I almost can’t believe it.

In one short year: I lived in Costa Rica. I put all my belongings in storage. I traveled to 20 US states (4 of them I went to twice). I drove clear across the country in an RV, twice. Grew my business bigger than it had ever been. I started this blog! I started a new business. I loved, without being loved back. I had multiple broken hearts. I had to say goodbye to people and places and I didn’t really want to. I lived in Austin. I rediscovered my passion for country dancing and firearms. I discovered a new passion for riding motorcycles. I did things I’d never done before. I learned how to drive, operate, and fix an RV. I did Random Acts of Kindness for complete strangers and volunteered in local communities. I was honest and open. I changed my patterns. I got jealous, and handled it. I shared my heart with you all. I cried my head off…in front of people. And I danced more, laughed more, cried more, loved more, grew more, and changed more than ever.

And I’m proud.
Thank you for being here with me.

So in reflecting on 2011, I’ve been thinking about some the many life and love lessons I’ve learned. And I want to share them with you all:

1) Take the risk. Buy the ticket. Get on the plane.
2) Always do that which scares you.
3) Cry when you need to, for as long as you need to.
4) Go way out of your comfort zone
5) Apologize for your wrongdoings
6) Make mistakes
7) Don’t be afraid to love
8) Partnership makes work more fun
9) Every missed opportunity is something exciting waiting to happen
10) Love someone, even if they don’t love you back
11) Love someone even if it doesn’t turn out the way you want it to
12) You can’t create a spark that isn’t there
13) There are amazing people everywhere
14) Love without wanting something in return
15) Hold nothing back
16) Hard work plus clear intention creates unbelievable results
17) Always be yourself
18) You are WAY more capable than you can even imagine
19) Lean on those who love you.
20) DANCE as often as possible.
21) Every situation is an opportunity to learn and grow
22) Do nice things for other people
23) When you’re unhappy, look inward first
24) Have more fun than you could possibly imagine.

Here’s a fun, silly, Sally-style video with some more lessons:

I’m so in love with 2011…with all its many ups and downs. I did a heck of a lot of growing, accompanied by a heck of a lot of growing pains. Man, it was both the hardest, and the most amazing year I’ve ever had. I know I’ll continue to grow, forever, but I’m looking forward to 2012 being the year that I see the fruits of my labor. It’s hard to imagine that 2012 could be as wild and adventurous and tumultuous as 2011, but who knows. I intend for it to be sparkling and bright and full of serendipitous moments, love, joy, opportunities, smiling, laughter, business, $$$$, and more than I could possible even imagine or dream up for my life. I have some big goals in mind. I’m going to get them. I know it. And you all are along for the ride. LET’S DO THIS!!!

How was your year? Leave a comment below and tell me the most pivotal thing that happened to you this year. Or comment about which life lesson from above resonated with you the most. AND…share this post with your peeps! Mwah.

As I plan my 2012 reinvention, I got my first big “lightbulb over my head” idea. And then your Tweet showed up. And this got me even more excited! Will start in on the above list with elan – and REALLY dance as soon as my knee feels better! Thanks, Sally!

  2. Kathleen says:

ahhhhhh LOVE this story and video! Infused me with such LOVE & delight! JOY! yessssssssss… YOU really made YOU happen this year! and I can feel the POWER in that. Really stepping up and DOING IT! my imagination is running wild after your video. Yes… I can just do THAT! and THAT! and that! there is a wee voice in the back of my head that is suggesting otherwise because I don’t look exactly like you. But that is a question I am going to shoot off to you for your requests for questions & probs to address! YAY!

So thank you, Sally. You are soooooo on the right track! making YOU happen is a facilitating inspiration and POWER for others to seize onto and make THEM happen! LOVE!!! xo

    • Sallyhope says:

Miss Kathleen…I cant express how much your comments mean to me! The energy you give off makes me feel so loved and so supported and I hope you know how much I appreciate that. And YES!! You can do THAT, and THATTTT, and THATTTTTTTT!! Whatever it is that your “that” is, you can definitely do it. There will always be voices. That won’t change. But you can just bypass them and do “that” anyway. I can’t wait to hear what you’re up to this year too.

  3. Sally + firearms = <3

    Heh…

Guurrl…so excited for you. You always have a rock star way to showing us that vulnerability and strength are cut from the same cloth. Looking forward to all the amazeballs stuff you’ll be bringing to the world. 2011 taught me that it’s cool to be yourself. Like, nothing’s cooler. And risk? The only risk is not doing the thing. Thank you for being you. Rock star Sally, that girl.

    Big x’s and o’s…:)

    • Sallyhope says:

I love this comment so much!! “Vulnerability and strength are cute from the same cloth.” Yes. And your life lessons are soooooooooooo true and SOOOOOOOOOOO important. Holy moly. Being yourself and being willing to take risks, I mean, those are two of the most important lessons. Gosh, so grateful to be your friend. So happy to have you here. And feel so blessed to have your support. Can’t wait to cheer you on in 2012.

  5. Rachel says:

LOL! I LOVE THIS!!! You’ve come a long way baby!!
You are in inspiration!! You and your red lipstick!
    Happy New Year Sally!!

    • Sallyhope says:

Girl you were a huge part of the adventures of this year!! And I’m so inspired by YOU!!! Cheers to making dreams happen. CLINK!

  6. Oh my beoo beoo. I am so proud of you! It is such an honor to be along with you for this crazy awesome lesson filled journey we are on. You really have learned and grown in such poignant ways. Reading the blog and watching the video amazes me. I’m like “Damn we have done so much shit!!” Haha. And despite how fucking hard it was at times we had so much fun. My life took such a phenomenal turn when you arrived on the scene. Thank the heavens above for that!! Love you more than words can describe my beautiful partner in kindness. Xoxo!

    Love!
    Natalie

    P.S. I totally teared up. ;)

    • Sallyhope says:

Girl…the feeling is mutual. Every adventure this year either had you in it, or you supporting it, and I’m so grateful for that. I cannot believe all the stuff we did and stuff that happened this year. It’s pretty unbelievable. I am so curious to see what 2012 will look like!! All kinds of amazing (is what I’m intentioning). DREAM BOMB!!!

  7. Hey Cousin, It really was great seeing you in Nashville. The 3 of you are amazing. (As I’m looking at Natalie’s pic. right above this post ahaha) Since I saw you I enrolled in a school..(ICF certified) and have been meeting with lots of people in the industry here that can help me advertise and get the word out. I’ve been staying up at night working on a site. Nobody in our family even knows I’m doing this. Not because I don’t want them to know. But…just because ehh…I’ll tell them later. You were the one whose opinion mattered to me on this. Thank you so much for your encouraging words and incredible attitude. I’m off to Texas next week for a 3 day seminar (any excuse to go to TX). Thanks again soooo much. Oh, just a thought. Can we adopt Natalie as our cousin too???

    • Sallyhope says:

Cousin…WOOWOWOWOOWOWO!!! Oh my gosh! I’m so happy for you! How does it feel? And don’t worry…you can tell people in your own time. It took me awhile too to start shouting it from the rooftops. What was the defining moment that pushed you over the edge to sign up? Know that you have my full love and full support. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Which school did you choose? And as for Natalie…YES!! She is VERY adoptable. :)

  8. Kerrie says:

Love your video, your journey & your transparency. I remember talking to you on the phone back in July as I was just embarking on my own adventure. So many lessons along the way, but after reading through my 2011 journals, the thing I’m most thrilled with is this: I declared this would be the year that I fell in live with myself… And that desire is now a reality! I stand so firmly grounded in self-love no matter where I go or what happens, I’m at peace. Look forward to crossing paths with you in the New Year!

    Lots of Love,
    Kerrie

    • Sallyhope says:

What an amazing lesson to have sought and to now be living. That is amazing and so darn important. And I’m sure with all your travels, when you’re the only thing constant in your life, self-love is so important. I’m so happy for you. These adventures are wild, eh?

  9. I wanted to do this for so long but, I was really on the fence about it. The night before you contacted me to say you were coming to town I was telling Scott…”If I just had a sign letting me know if this is a decent idea” The next morning, I read your message…If that wasn’t a sign…Well, then there are NO SIGNS!!!

    • Sallyhope says:

Well looky there! Ask and ye shall receive. I’m happy to be a part of it. And can’t wait to hear how it all goes. VERY exciting!!!

  10. Jóna H Sig says:

Beautiful, beautiful Sally! Sounds like you had quite the year!

I’m so happy for you and all of your experiences and growth; so happy that it reeks of ulterior motive! See, my biggest discovery in the ridiculous year of 2011 was the community of the internet. One which you seem very much a part of.
What cemented the idea that this is really a colony of interesting minds is the collective sense of growth. Everybody is so willing to learn and share their story, in that festive kind of way that marks a community. There is a shared sense of accomplishment and hope.
Thanks for contributing and upholding the standards of my new favorite travel destination, it has meant a lot to me :)

    • Sallyhope says:

Oh Miss Jona…I absolutely ADORE you (already) and am so happy that you have found your people on this here internet, including lil ol me. I agree that it’s an amazing community, chock full of interesting, smart, talented, wild, open-minded people. I love that you have joined the party. And I look forward to partying more with you. It really means a lot to me that you come say hello here. Can’t wait to see you guys…whenever that may be!!

  11. Nancy Brundage says:

    Hey Miss Sally,

I just got caught up on all your postings. I love reading them so much. You are so awesome. I always knew you were but its just a little different level of awesomeness than I originally thought. Anyway, I hope we will run into eachother soon.

    Love ya, Nancy

    • Sallyhope says:

Oh Nancy…thank you so much for reading and for still being such an important part of my life even if we don’t see each other often. I’m so glad I met you. PLease say hello to everyone for me.

      Love you,
      Sally
