I don’t actually have experience being a pornstar, but I’ve spent more time than I’d like to admit thinking about them. They fascinate me. This sounds silly, but I sometimes actually envy their openness and freedom. I’ve often wondered if I could ever do that…be that free, exposed, vulnerable.

And then I giggle and blush and say “on no…I could never…or…could I? Hmmmm.”

The jury is still out. However, I’m thinking I probably won’t ever actually be a pornstar, but the more I thought about what I like about (what I perceive of) them, the more I realized I could apply it all to business.

Having your own business is all about being in love and being turned on. You have to be in love with your ideas to act on them, have that spark of intense passion to propel your business forward. And much like a pornstar, you must give both your business and yourself some much needed TLC and lots of smoochies in order for it to be successful.

It’s time we start loving up on our businesses a little bit more, and here are some ways to do that. Let’s get all Jenna Jameson on this bitch. Here we go.

Fake it Til You Make It

So, no one knows how to do something until they’ve done it. Duh…right? The first time you coach a client you’re probably gonna suck at it, or the first time you write an e-book it might not be amazing. But that doesn’t mean you should pack your bags and go home. You gotta keep going and just act like you know what you’re doing, until you eventually do. Think about pornstars…I’m pretty sure that they fake their orgasms 99.9% of the time. But that doesn’t make them less sexy to watch (I mean statistically speaking…since porn is a multi-bazillion dollar industry). So even when you’re feeling like you’re no good at your craft, or you feel like you don’t know what you’re doing, just fake it until you get there.

If It Doesn’t Feel Good…Don’t Do It

Jenna Jameson says of anal sex “I’ve only given that up to three men, all of whom I really loved. Doing it on camera would be compromising myself.” See…even pornstars have boundaries. In this case, Jenna knows exactly what she will and won’t do in her business, and it acts as a compass for her. You can apply this to your own business. If you absolutely hate doing your finances and it’s stopping you up from moving forward, hire someone else. If it feels cheesy to market in certain ways, don’t do it. Never forget that when you’re in business for yourself you get to create the exact kind of business you want. If something doesn’t feel good, don’t do it.

Get Used to Being Exposed and Vulnerable

Being a pornstar is possibly the most exposed a person could be. Literally. Those girls have it ALL hanging out. And not only are they exposed, they are also supposed to look sexy, and comfortable, and like they’re having the time of their life. In business, it’s the same. When you put yourself out there, when you write blogs, do videos, hold workshops, and work with clients, you become exposed. People can see you, and judge you. You run the risk of being vulnerable and embarrassed. But again, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. It just means you should get used to it. And if you can, embrace it and learn to love it. I’m sure the first time Jenna made a movie, she was nervous and scared, but by now, I’m sure she is so used to it that she can rock it out like a sexy rockstar.

Extreme Self Care

I imagine that a pornstar has an extensive self-care to-do list, from STD tests, to brazlian waxes, to haircuts, to mani/pedis to tanning. It’s all part of the job, all a part of the upkeep of her business. She has to make sure her health is top notch in order for her to be able to go to work and perform. The same thing applies to you in business. In any business there are ways you need to take care of yourself in order to perform your duties well. Sometimes that might include taking the time you need for yourself, setting boundaries on your work hours, creating a clear line between work life and home life, or making sure you’re operating at optimum health (exercise, massages, healthy eating). Ever heard that quote, “when mama ain’t happy, aint nobody happy”? Well that applies here too. When you aren’t taking care of yourself, your business is going to suffer. So make sure you know what you need, and then make sure you do whatever it takes to get it.

Treat Your Business Like a Business

I know I’m sorta obsessed with Jenna Jameson, but it’s honestly because I respect her business prowess. In her book she says, “I’m a business woman, and I save my money, I take care of myself, I don’t do drugs, I don’t drink. And that’s why I’ve been trying to get myself out there, saying that this isn’t that kind of industry, as long as you take control, as a woman.” Yes, Jenna…yes! I agree. If you want to be successful in your industry, you must treat your business as a business and not as a hobby. You have to take control, not expect anyone to do it for you, and demand it be the way you want it to be. Take it seriously and you’ll be taken seriously. YEAH FUCKERS!

P.s.  I will leave you with one last Jenna quote.  “My definition of courage is never letting anyone define you.”  Here’s the icing on the cake.  Do shiz your own way.  Listen to Jenna.  Bitch knows whats up.
